Model 3: Bridges to Inclusion - What did I know before beginning starting the module?

Objectives for Module 3:
  • understand how and when adaptations versus modifications are to be used
  • recognize the applications of differentiated instruction and response to intervention
  • gain an appreciation of inclusion and an awareness of the existing issue

What did I know about the content of this module before starting?
  • I was aware of the difference in language between adaptation and modifications from module 1, and my teacher education program. Adaptations are "teaching and assessment strategies made to accommodate a student's special needs." (BC Ministry of education, 2016, p.2) While modifications are, "Learning outcomes that are substantially different from the regular curriculum, and specifically selected to meet the student's special needs." (BC Ministry of education, 2016, p.2) I remember learning in my teacher education program that students in British Columbia that were on a modified program weren't eligible to receive a Dogwood certificate but instead receive a certificate of completion.

  • I am very familiar with differentiated instruction(DI) and use differentiations daily in my classroom. I am most familiar with differentiating the learning environment for instance: dimming lights, various workspaces, and seating, etc.I'm also familiar with tiered -differentiation, having different levels of challenge for the same learning outcome.

  • I have little knowledge of response to intervention (RTI) but I am being introduced to it through a student that I have concerns about. I have tried many differentiated instruction strategies with little success and have completed a PRIS form in order to bring this student's struggles to the school-based team (SBT)

  • As I continue to learn about inclusion, I think I am learning to check my thinking and am reevaluating how I plan for my students. I can only move forward in my awareness from here.
