Teaching Students w/ASD 4.2: Competency-based IEPs -Reflection

As a fairly new employee to my district, and to teaching in Canada where I now work closely with students with exceptionalities, competency-based IEPs are all I have known. Competency-based IEPs look at the students learning profile and strengths and stretches in social, personal, and academic areas to develop meaningful goals that meet the learner where he/she/they are at. I think these IEP help us learn about the student and focus on what they are capable of doing rather than perceived deficits. It's also interesting to look back through a student's file and see how their interests and strengths have changed from term to term with these IEPs. I also appreciate that competency-based IEPs are qualitative and focus on soft-skills just as much as hard-skills and not purely academic.
