SPED 2 Portfolio: Top 5 Ways to Foster Parent Involvement and Engagement

Working together with family members to support student's IEP goals and throughout the IEP process is important to the success of the student. How do we get family members involved in the process? I have shared my top 5 ideas for fostering parent involvement below.

1. Create an outline of what happens at a meeting in very simple language to make it easier for parents to feel like they know what is going on and be ready to contribute

2. Create a support group or committee with other parents of students with IEPs district-wide so that parents can feel supported

3. Welcome parents from day one and let them know that teachers are there to support their children as best they can. It is a team effort and they are not alone.

4. Report little successes so that not every conversation is about a child’s areas of growth

5. Less measurable, more qualitative goals as Shelley Moore would say, “See ya later S.M.A.R.T. Goals!” (2019)
